St Molios Church, Shiskine, Isle of Arran

Another in my series of churches I have come across on my travels.

This time on the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde. At the east end of the road that goes west across the island from Brodick toward Blackwaterfoot is the village of Shiskine. In the village is the church of St Molios.

St Molios is not a name I had came across before. Molios was an Irish monk who, from about 590AD, lived as a hermit on Holy Island in Lamlash Bay, on the east side of Arran. Las or Lais was more usually knows as Molas or Molias or Molio or Molios, and the Gaelic name for Holy Island became Eilean Molaise.

You can read more and see some pictures of the interior at the Undiscovered Scotland entry on the church.

A few pictures from my visit are on my fotopic site.
