Advent Antiphons

The Advent antiphons, which come before and after the singing of the Magnificat at Evensong from 17 to 23 December, are expressions both of praise and of desire. These have provided a rich source of devotional imagery in Advent. It is from these texts that the great Advent hymn ‘O Come, O come, Emmanuel’ is drawn.

St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow used the antiphons as the basis of the 2010 Advent Carol Service.

Over the next week, you will find each of the anitphons (in latin with an english translation) in the lead up to Christmas.
