Advent Antiphons

The Advent antiphons, which come before and after the singing of the Magnificat at Evensong from 17 until Christmas, are expressions both of praise and of desire. These have provided a rich source of devotional imagery in Advent. It is from these texts that the great Advent hymn ‘O Come, O come, Emmanuel’ is drawn.

During these days before Christmas, the prescribed readings include the greatest prophecies from the Book of Isaiah. I have always felt the King James Bible translation highlights the poetry of Isaiah’s writings, so the extracts I will be using come from the 1611 translation.
